Sermon Highlights, Sunday, August 26, 2018

Jesus came to show us how to live a different life.

He taught life skills, so we could live:

  • In abundance
  • Love each other
  • Serve one another
  • Forgive 70 times 7, not get even
  • Allow love to cover mistakes, not expose them.
  • Be gentle not harsh with each other.

In the book of 1, 2 and 3 John, John was writing to the church because they had lost the values Jesus set in place.

2 John they are being warned about what they are hearing.  Is it truth?  Are you loving others?  Be careful, don’t lose what you have worked so hard to achieve.

3 John they were being warned again.  Some leaders were telling the church, do not show hospitality to the traveling preachers.  And if they did they would be thrown out of the church for allowing them to stay overnight in their homes!

1 John……

In God there is no darkness!  If we have fellowship with Him and go on living in spiritual darkness, we are not practicing the truth.  When we are living in the light, spiritual light we have fellowship with each other and Jesus blood cleanses us from all sin.

Sin an interesting word.  We think of sin as only directed toward God.  But the scripture says we sin against each other.  We can even sin against ourselves.  So what is sin.  It is separation.  We are separating ourselves from God by our actions.  We separate ourselves from each other by our actions.  And we even bring separation in our self by our actions.

We need to learn how to ask for forgiveness.  To God, others, ourselves!  Then we must be humble enough to receive the forgiveness.

If someone says they love God and don’t obey His commandments that person is not living in truth and is a liar.

What are His commandments?

Believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another!

Don’t love things that are going to disappear.  It’s not about our bank account or our possessions.  It is only about the things we will take with us to heaven.  Other people.  We spend so much time gaining money and taking care of our stuff – what place do people, family have in our lives?

A person who has no love is still dead!

We know what real love is.  Jesus gave His life for us.  Love is gentle, kind, compassionate, covering others faults, patient.  You know, 1 Corinthians 13, that we hear at weddings.  Love is in the lives of God’s children.   Jesus showed love to us, He is expecting us to do the same.

Continue to love one another, for love comes from God.  Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.  But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him.  This is real love – not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

Since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other….

God is love and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.  And as we live in God our love grows more perfect.

Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear.  We love each other because He loved us first.

Not only do we give love we must receive love.  Giving love is important but we also must receive what others are trying to do for us we are going to be empty! When you receive the love someone is giving it is loving them back.

The same way we love others is how we are loving God.

Our actions are to look like Jesus actions in this world.  May we not allow ourselves to get sidetracked into separation, lack of hospitality, unloving acts toward others.

Pay attention!  Fight for what is right!   A LOVE that covers people!
